Emergency Rooms and Hospitals
When time matters, knowing which nearby facilities are freestanding emergency rooms and which are full-service hospitals can help with advance planning. The tables below cover facilities serving each county and regional referral hospitals in San Antonio. For a life-threatening emergency, call 911.
Urgent-care clinics treat many non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries but do not replace an emergency department. A freestanding ER is an emergency room, not an urgent-care clinic, and may use emergency-department or facility billing. When it is safe to do so, confirm the facility type and insurance arrangements. Never delay emergency care because of billing questions.

Flood Warnings and Road Closures
Hill Country flooding is driven by the region's Edwards Plateau limestone geology. Rainwater moves rapidly through fractures, caves, and solution channels in the karst limestone, producing flash flooding in low-water crossings and canyon bottoms with little to no warning. The National Weather Service recommends: "Turn around, don't drown." Never drive through moving water, and do not drive around barricades. The water depth may be deeper than it appears, and the road surface may be washed out.
County-specific resources for road closures and flood alerts:
- Bexar County: BexarFlood.org — real-time flood monitoring and road closure maps
- Kendall County: Kendall County Road & Bridge at 830-995-2995 for road condition reports
- Comal County: Comal County Road Closures — road closure information
- Bandera County: Bandera County Sheriff dispatch (830-796-3771) or Bandera County notices for road conditions

Flood Preparedness Checklist
Before and During Flood Season
- Know your flood zone: Check the FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) for your property address at FEMA Map Service Center. Not every Hill Country property in a FEMA high-risk zone is rated or mapped accurately; this guide explains flood zones in detail.
- Sign up for alerts: Register for your county's emergency notification system. Comal County: Emergency Notification System. Kendall County: Kendall County Alert. Bandera County: Bandera County Emergency Management.
- Know your evacuation routes: Identify high-ground routes out of your area. Do not rely solely on GPS during a flood event. Have multiple exit routes planned.
- Maintain an Emergency Supply Kit: Keep water, nonperishable food, medications, animal supplies, flashlights, batteries, first-aid kit, and other essentials sufficient for at least 72 hours. Store in a portable container that can be loaded quickly.
- Private well safety after flooding: If floodwater reached your well, assume the water is contaminated. Do not drink or use the water until the well has been tested and disinfected by a licensed professional.
- Septic system after flooding: Do not use the septic system if the drain field is saturated or flooded. Have the system inspected before resuming normal use to avoid backup or structural damage.
- Generator safety: Operate portable generators outdoors only, at least 20 feet from any structure. Never run a generator inside a garage, basement, or crawl space. Carbon monoxide poisoning kills quickly and silently.
- Propane tank safety after flooding: If a propane tank has been submerged, moved, or damaged by floodwater, have it inspected by a qualified professional before use. Do not attempt to operate valves or re-light pilot lights yourself.
- Save offline access: Bookmark or download the county and utility emergency pages listed on this page while you have internet connectivity. During a widespread outage, websites may become slow or unavailable, and having critical numbers saved offline is essential.
Snakebite Guidance
Human Snakebites
If you or someone with you is bitten by a venomous snake in the Hill Country (including rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths, sometimes called water moccasins):
- Call 911 immediately
- Call Poison Control at 800-222-1222 for guidance
- Keep the victim calm and still; immobilize the affected limb at or below heart level
- Remove jewelry or tight clothing near the bite site before swelling progresses
- Do not cut the wound
- Do not attempt to suck out venom
- Do not apply a tourniquet or constriction band
- Do not apply ice or heat directly to the wound
- Do not attempt to catch or kill the snake for identification
- Do not give the victim alcohol, caffeine, or any medication unless directed by a medical professional
Veterinary Snakebites
If your pet or livestock is bitten by a venomous snake, contact your veterinarian immediately. Keep the animal calm and restrict its movement as much as possible. Do not apply any home remedies, cut the wound, or attempt to suction. Transport the animal to the nearest veterinary facility that can handle the species and severity. Contact the veterinary clinic ahead of time so they can prepare. Antivenom may not be stocked at every clinic, so confirm availability during transport if doing so will not delay care.
